There are some really good science fiction stories about the counter productivity of intelligence, and how no intelligent species can survive too long. One was called swarm I can't remember the name of the author. Personally I believe with enough wisdom, a little bit of intelligence is a good thing. But we have no wisdom and tons of intelligence and we can all see the results. If capitalism could have been avoided we might still be way far away from destruction but it wasn't.
