Thanks Anna. The biggest disaster Cuba has faced was the fall of the Soviet Union and loss of all the trade and oil they had been sending to Cuba. They had to go from a modern capitalist-style economy to a sustainable, non-oil-based one in a couple of years, without help from anyone and still under US economic blockade. It was really hard, but they did it with measures like the ones you describe.
