Jason, your description of capitalism, "as an arrangement where the commonfolk have rights and freedoms to offer each other goods and services and jobs and labor" is unfortunately a fairy tale. There were societies like you describe, but capitalism put an end to them. There are many definitions, but in all of them capitalists need a state to protect their ownership of capital. As time goes on, they take more and more money and so more power. They just use the electoral process to cover this process up.
